About the author

Honore de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist and playwright. He is best known for his novel sequence La Comédie Humaine (The Human Comedy), which comprises over 90 novels and stories. Balzac was born in Tours, France, and studied law at the Sorbonne. He began his writing career as a playwright, and his first play, Cromwell, was a success. He then turned to writing novels, and his novel sequence La Comédie Humaine is considered one of the greatest works of French literature. Balzac's novels are known for their realism and psychological insight, and they helped to establish realism as a major literary movement. He died in 1850.
