Walter Baumgartner

Walter Baumgartner was born on 24 November 1887 in Winterthur in Switzerland and spent his childhood in Zurich. His father was Andreas Baumgartner, professor of English at the Polytechnic in Zurich. In 1906 to 1912 he studied at the University of Zurich is the first story and later both Semitic and classical philology. In 1913 he became a doctor of philosophy. He then studied at the Universities of Marburg and Giessen; In 1916 he received the theological licentiate degree. At the University of Marburg he was since 1915 as a lecturer of the Hebrew language in charge, from 1916 Associate Professor of Old Testament Studies and from 1920 associate professor. At the University of Giessen Baumgartner worked as a full professor in 1928; 1929-1958 he also taught at the University of Basel. On January 30, 1970, he died in Basel.
