Charles Hamilton Sorley (1895-1915) was born in Aberdeen and was a Scottish poet. His love of running was evident in his pre-war poems. He volunteered for military service and joined the Suffolk Regiment. He was killed in action near the Battle of Loos on 13 October 1915. His work was published posthumously in 1916 to critical acclaim. Sorley was regarded by Poet Laureate John Masefield as the greatest loss of all the poets killed during the First World War.
