Entgegen seiner Intention stärkt Karl Barth das Individuum - und wird damit zum Vorreiter dieser massgeblichen Tendenz in der evangelischen Ethik der Nachkriegszeit. Das zeigt eine Relektüre von Barths Ethik anhand der Individualisierungstheorie des Soziologen Ulrich Beck. Die Herauslösung des Individuums aus gemeinschaftlichen Zusammenhängen birgt nach Beck riskante Freiheiten. Für Barth handelt es sich um eine Fehlentwicklung, die er gerade verhindern möchte. Doch indem Barth das Individuum in seiner ethischen Orientierung primär an die unmittelbare Gottesbeziehung bindet, stärkt er - neuzeitlich anschlussfähig - ungewollt das Handlungssubjekt: In der Terminologie Becks eine unbeabsichtigte "Nebenfolge".
