Da un braccio all'altro della spirale avanza l'incognita che Hans Rebka, Darya Lang e gli altri personaggi di questo grande romanzo sono chiamati a svelare. Dietro l'apparizione di un'astronave di morti proveniente dal Sagittario si cela infatti ben altro e tutto fa credere che lo scenario del mistero debba ampliarsi. Proprio nel Sagittario bisogna cercare le tracce dei "colpevoli", anche se a risolvere l'enigma non basteranno le conoscenze che l'umanità ha accumulato finora sugli Artefici. (Anzi, all'inizio non è neppure certo che gli indizi porteranno a loro.) L'epica risposta a tutti gli interrogativi rivelerà, ancora una volta, il talento di Charles Sheffield non solo come romanziere ma come fisico e ideatore di plausibili civiltà del cosmo.
