Die ersten Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts sind in Deutschland und der Schweiz auch in theologischer Hinsicht geprägt durch vielfältige Um- und Aufbrüche. Sie führten u.a. zur Ausbildung des Religiösen Sozialismus und der Dialektischen Theologie. Diesen Transformationsprozess erhellt der Briefwechsel zwischen den Basler Theologen P. Wernle (1872-1939) und E. Thurneysen (1888-1977). Zudem zeichnet er den theologischen Emanzipationsprozess Thurneysens nach sowie dessen Suche nach einer theologischen Neuorientierung. Diese vollzog sich in Auseinandersetzung mit dem Religiösen Sozialismus von L. Ragaz und H. Kutter und in enger Verbindung mit K. Barth.
