Run, Rose, Run - A Comprehensive Summary

She put the hood over her moist hair and pulled the poncho over her jacket, but she kept an optimistic look on her face and tapped her foot on the gravel shoulder as a new tune began to play in her brain. She crossed her fingers when she saw the white station wagon approaching, going at least twenty miles under the speed limit, and hoped it was some good old grandpa pulling over to offer her a lift. When she believed she’d have her pick of rides, she turned down two: the first from a chain-smoking mother with two snarling Rottweilers in the back seat, and the second from a boy who appeared taller than Mount Everest.
The white station wagon was fifty yards away, then twenty-five, and she gave a cheerful, graceful wave as it approached her, as if she were some kind of star on the Crosby Freeway shoulder, not some half-desperate nobody with all her worldly goods in a backpack. It wouldn’t have mattered if she had stood on her head and fired rainbows out of her Ropers. I’m not going to lie down, but I’m not going to take it down. It was catchy, to be sure, and AnnieLee wished for her beloved guitar for the twentieth time. For one thing, it wouldn’t have fit in her suitcase, and for another, it was already hung on Jeb’s Pawn’s wall. If she had one wish, it was that whoever bought Maybelle would take good care of her, aside from getting out of Texas. It was raining harder than she’d seen in years by this point.
