Es ist eine radikale These, die der Fundamentaltheologe Gregor Maria Hoff in seinem Beitrag, der sich mit dem Missbrauchsskandal in der katholischen Kirche systematisch auseinandersetzt, entwickelt. Nicht die, wenn auch durchaus ehrlich gemeinte Betroffenheitsgeste steht bei ihm im Vordergrund. Er geht an die Wurzel des Skandals, die er im Klerikalismus und dem daraus abgeleiteten Amtsverständnis der katholischen Priester findet. Nicht nur der (skandalöse) Umgang mit dem Skandal, der Skandal selbst weist für Hoff auf ein systemisches Problem hin. Was in letzter Konsequenz nichts anderes bedeutet, als dass es nicht nur zu viele einzelne Priester waren, die sich hier schuldig gemacht haben – die Kirche selbst hat sich schuldig gemacht.
