The brilliance of this book cannot be overstated: expertly crafted, it weaves the tale of three women with uniquely different perspectives. From the author's grandmother, who grew up in feudal China, the author's mother who lived during the rise of Communism to the author herself, who ultimately calls to question her unwavering belief in everything she had ever been told. This book is a journey; an education not only into the bitter and bloody history of China, but also into the reader's experience.

A stunningly epic story that is also incredibly sad yet uplifting and inspiring! Such a loss of so many lives, loss of so much potential and resources yet an amazing testament to the strength of human endurance!
