Hij krijgt een verboden relatie met de dochter van koopman Bitter en wordt gevangengezet. Hij ontsnapt en wordt als Surapati guerrillaleider en later regent. Hij sterft in 1706 de heldendood in een beslissende veldslag met de VOC. Indonesië eert hem sinds 1975 als nationale held. ‘Surapati’ van Robin Raven is een onweerstaanbare combinatie van historie, legende en literaire fictie.
