About the author

Edward Frederic Benson was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, and short story writer. He is best known for his six-volume series of novels, the Mapp and Lucia books, and his biographies of his family members. Benson was born in 1867 and educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began writing fiction in his twenties and his first novel, Dodo, was published in 1893. He wrote more than fifty novels, as well as numerous short stories and essays. Benson was a celebrated literary figure of his era, and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1932. He died in 1940.
