This book presents a modern and balanced approach while discussing the conceptual and practical aspects of vacuum science and technology. The chapters in the book are planned in systematic fashion from basic concepts through vacuum production and measurement, vacuum components, trouble shooting and then providing applications. It would be useful to students, both at the under-graduate and graduate levels in physics and also in various branches of engineering. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Physics from the IIT-Madras, Dr. V.V. Rao joined the faculty at IIT-Kharagpur. Since then, he has been teaching vacuum technology both at the UG and PG levels. Dr. T.B. Gosh obtained his Ph.D. degree in Physics from the IIT-Kharagpur. Since 1987, he has been a faculty member of the Physics department of IIT, Kharagpur. Dr. K.L. Chopra was the Director of IIT-Kharagpur. He received his Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of British Columbia, Canada.
