Ampla cercetare a lui Tudor Dinu urmărește să reconstituie civilizația Bucureștiului de secol XVIII sub toate aspectele ei. Primul volum al lucrării se intitula „Biserici, ceremonii, războaie“. Volumul de față se apleacă asupra modului de administrare a orașului, a sistemului de asistență socială și medicală, a vieții economice (meșteșuguri, industrie, comerț), dar și asupra catastrofelor naturale ce au lovit Bucureștii. Ultimul volum al monografiei va fi dedicat vieții cotidiene și vieții mondene, învătământului, culturii și alogenilor din capitala Valahiei fanariote.
