Información sobre este eBook

A new translation of Denis Diderot's 1773 This is Not a Tale (Ceci n’est pas un conte) from the original French manuscript into American English. This edition contains an afterword by the translator on Diderot's philosophic legacy, a timeline of his works and life, and a glossary of philosophic terminology utilized in his works. The story appeared in the 1821 Brière edition of Diderot's works and this is the first and only English translation of it. "This is Not a Tale" is a very short story by Diderot that challenges the conventions of storytelling. The narrative unfolds as a series of contradictory and fragmented statements, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. Diderot experiments with narrative techniques and challenges readers' expectations, inviting them to question the nature of storytelling and the reliability of narrative voices. Interesting fact: "This is Not a Tale" appeared in the 1821 Brière edition of Diderot's works, and this edition included the first English translation of the story. While there are no specific comments from other philosophers or intellectuals on this work, "This is Not a Tale" stands out as an example of Diderot's innovative and unconventional approach to narrative form. Denis Diderot is a critical figure of the Enlightenment who receives little attention from modern day philosophers. Diderot lived in the shadow of Rousseau and Volatire, whom he knew and worked with.

Acerca del autor

A friend of Rousseau, Diderot was an Enlightenment writer and Philosopher. Diderot's other works spanned a wide range of genres, including novels, scientific treatises, and art criticism. His novel "Jacques the Fatalist" explores themes of determinism and free will, while "Rameau's Nephew" is a dialogic exploration of moral relativism and the nature of genius. In his art criticism, notably his writings on the Salons (the official art exhibitions in Paris), Diderot was pioneering, blending detailed descriptions with broader philosophical reflections on art and aesthetics.
