About this eBook

This Top Five Classics edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s second Sherlock Holmes mystery, The Sign of Four, includes:

• The original, unabridged text of the novel, proofread and formatted for ereaders
• 18 illustrations by F.H. Townsend, Arthur Twidle, and others
• A helpful introduction, author bio, and bibliography

In 1890 Arthur Conan Doyle followed up the 1887 debut of Sherlock Holmes in A Study in Scarlet with The Sign of Four. Revealing the darker side of Holmes’s personal habits, the story introduces us to Watson’s future wife, the lovely young Mary Morstan, and plunges the now-famous detective and his companion into a case involving stolen treasure, an eerie locked-room murder, a one-legged man, the Afghan War, and a thrilling midnight chase down the Thames. An overlooked gem, The Sign of Four may be the finest of Conan Doyle’s book-length Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

This being the second Sherlock Holmes story Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote, it continues to lay the ground work of the character that Holmes will go on to become. While the prior adventure laid out his personality, this one digs a bit deeper into his quirks and his methods, specifically the way his deductions are made. Similarly, it continues to provide depth and background to Watson's story, who comes to meet his future wife in this book. I look forward to reading additional Sherlock Holmes stories in the near future.
