LAWRENCE FRIEDMAN is a professor of law at Stanford University. He teaches courses in American legal history and law and society. He is the author of A History of American Law, Crime and Punishment in American History, The Human Rights Culture, and Total Justice, among other works. Professor Friedman has also published The Big Trial: Law as Public Spectacle and, most recently, Impact: How Law Affects Behavior.
