About this eBook

It was a chilly October evening in the small town of Dead Brook. The leaves had turned a brilliant shade of orange and the air was filled with the scent of wood smoke and decay. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the deserted streets, a group of teenagers gathered around a flickering bonfire in the center of the town square.

The group was comprised of five friends: Emma, the bookish brunette with a penchant for ghost stories; Jack, the handsome jock with a fearless attitude; Brenda, the shy redhead with a quick wit; Mike, the quiet musician with a love of all things macabre; and Lucy, the rebellious artist with a mischievous streak.

As they huddled around the crackling flames, passing a bottle of cheap vodka back and forth, Emma began to regale her friends with a tale she had heard from her older brother. It was a story as old as time, whispered in hushed tones by generations of teenagers looking for a thrill.

"It's called the Lost Number," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "They say if you dial it, bad luck will come your way. People have reported their houses burning down, their pets dying, even their loved ones meeting tragic ends. No one knows where the number came from or who it belongs to, but those who've dared to call it have suffered the consequences."

The group fell silent, their faces illuminated by the dancing flames. Brenda shivered and clutched her sweater tighter around her shoulders, while Jack laughed and rolled his eyes.

"Come on, Em," he scoffed. "You can't seriously believe that crap, can you? It's just an urban legend, nothing more."

But Emma's eyes were wide with fear as she stared into the fire. "I don't know, Jack," she said. "There have been too many stories, too many coincidences. I think there's something to it."
