The San Francisco earthquake sends a whorehouse piano player, a newspaper reporter and a thief to Los Angeles. Each attempt to rebuild their life which was forever changed on the morning of April 18, 1906. Renegade filmmakers from New York flee to Hollywood to make their movies. With the promise of stardom, the moguls run their studios with cutthroat efficiency, controlling the lives of all who work for them. Michael McGuire takes over the family enterprise. With the McGuire fortunes on the wane and prohibition looming on the horizon, Michael forges a partnership with Canadian and Mexican mobsters to import alcohol and cocaine to Los Angeles.
