About the author

Terence Chong is a sociologist and Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. He is editor of the Trends in Southeast Asia series and co-editor of SOJOURN: Journal of Social Issues in Southeast Asia.His research interests are globalization, the Southeast Asian middle class and civil society, and the sociology of culture.
