About this ebook

‘Susan Mallery never disappoints.’ Debbie Macomber

Becoming a family will take patience, humour, a little bit of
wine and a whole lot of love...

Life is meant to be savoured, but that’s not easy with
no family, limited prospects and a past you’d rather not talk about. Still, Callie Smith doesn’t know how to feel when she discovers she has a brother and a sister—Malcolm, who grew up with affection, wealth and privilege, and Keira, a streetwise twelve-year-old.

Callie doesn’t love being alone, but at least it’s safe. Despite her trepidation, she moves into the grand family home with her siblings and grandfather on the shores of Lake Washington, hoping just maybethis will be the start of a whole new life.
But starting over can be messy. Callie and Keira fit in with each other, but not with their posh new lifestyle, leaving Malcolm feeling like the odd man out in his own home. He was clever enough to turn a sleepy Seattle mail-order food catalog into an online gourmet powerhouse, yet he can’t figure out how to help his new sisters feel secure. But affection isn’t
Malcolm’s strong suit...until a beautiful barista teaches him that an open heart, like the family table, can always make room for more.

This book grabbed my attention the minute it started and of course Tanya Eby is a great narrator, one of my favourites. The main characters are Malcolm and his half-sisters, Keira and Cassie, then there was Delaney (who works in a coffee place in Malcolm's work building and soon starts seeing him romantically), and Santiago (Malcolm's second in command, his best friend and also starts romancing Cassie). Malcolm lives and works with his wealthy grandfather and they own a food company, Alberto's Alfresco, that his grandfather started. Malcolm has lived with his grandfather since he was small when he and his mother turned up on his grandfather's doorstep looking for his son Jerry, Malcolm's father. Jerry was around at that time but completely disinterested in being a father. Malcolm's mother eventually died, as did his father, and so it was just Malcolm and his grandfather for a while. Then a few years after Jerry's death they were going through old paperwork and found out that he had also fathered two other children (Keira and Cassie), so Alberto set about finding them and bringing them into the family. 12 year old Kiera was the first to arrive, with 26 year old Cassie following not long after. Malcolm was a quieter character and found it really hard to get close to his sisters initially, but with the help of Delaney (who he bought his coffee from every morning in the cafe that Delaney worked in) they soon got a lot closer. Keira was my favourite character, she certainly had abandonment issues to work through, but she had such a good head on her shoulders too and made me laugh. There were a lot of personal issues flying around with everyone and lots of working through things, but as the book slowly progressed it was really lovely to see them becoming a family and being there for one another. I did think both Cassie and Delaney were a bit unfair to poor old Malcolm at times but they all worked through their problems eventually and there was a lovely happy ending, what more can you ask for?! Very enjoyable.
