सर ‘करेक्ट’ बोलकर होंठों के कोनों में हलके से मुसकराते हुए ब्लैकबोर्ड की ओर मुड़ गए; लेकिन बोलने के साथ ही जबरदस्ती दबाई जानेवाली हँसी का धीमा फौवारा पीछे से छूटा था। यह मेरे द्वारा अंग्रेजी शब्दों के कस्बाई उच्चारण पर था। दबे शब्दों में मेरे उच्चारण की नकल की जा रही थी—जैसे नॉट को नाट; स्केल को इस्केल आदि। क्लास से उठकर जाते हुए एक लड़के से दूसरे को कहते सुना; ‘चील-गोजा।’ मैं एकाएक तिलमिलाता हुआ उस ग्रुप के पास पहुँच गया—‘आप लोग ‘चीलगोजा’ किसे कह रहे थे?’ ग्रुप थोड़ा चौंका; फिर एक लड़का ढिठाई से बोला—चीलगोजा; वो-वो एक ड्राइफ्रूट होता न—उसी को।’ ‘चुप रहिए!’ मेरा सारा चेहरा अपमान से दहक रहा था—‘मैं आप लोगों की तरह शान-शौकतवाला अंग्रेज नहीं; गँवार हूँ पर इतना पागल नहीं हूँ।’ ‘पागल? कौन आपको पागल कहता है? एक लड़का पुचकारता हुआ पास आ गया—आप तो खाली-पीली में गुस्सा करता—चीलगोजा सच्ची में ड्राइफ्रूट; ओ—क्या कहते हैं मदर टंग में बोल न।’ उसने दूसरे लड़कों को धकियाया। ‘जानता हूँ।’ मैं बात काटकर बोला; ‘इतनी अंग्रेजी मैं भी जानता हूँ—यह भी जानता हूँ कि अपने देश की हिंदी या कोई भी भाषा आप गलत बोलेंगे तो न आपको शर्म आएगी; न सुननेवाले को; लेकिन अगर कोई अंग्रेजी गलत बोल दे तो आप सरेआम मजाक उड़ाने से नहीं चूकते। आप जैसे भारतीय...।’
