About this ebook
Was macht die Wikinger eigentlich so faszinierend für uns heute? Ich vermute, es ist die Tatsache, dass sie uns fremd und vertraut zugleich vorkommen: Sie waren Europäer, sie sprachen eine germanische Sprache, sie waren unsere Nachbarn. Gleichzeitig wirkt es auf uns, als hätten sie sich eine archaische Unbeugsamkeit bewahrt, als auf dem europäischen Festland längst Christentum und Reichspolitik Einzug gehalten hatten. Wo fränkische Bauern ihr Vieh auf fruchtbarem Land weideten, trotzten sie dem kargen Norden und der Gischt des Atlantiks ihre Existenz ab. Da würde man zwar selbst nicht tauschen wollen, aber für den angenehmen Grusel, etwa bei der Lektüre eines "Spektrum Kompakts", sind das ideale Voraussetzungen.
