Sunday Times Memoir of the Year 2023

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow-and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling-and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness-and, because he blamed the press for his mother's death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.

At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn't find true love.

Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple's cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother. . . .

For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Cringefest of lies and pity!! Poor H&M couldn't get what they wanted so they attack the Royal family. To survive outside the Royal life write books and interviews (classy not)...not the actions of people wanting privacy. Bragging about killing people not going to help your security (so much for protecting your family), talking about your todger (grow up). Throw the book on the fire and stay warm is my advice and Harry if you lay with dogs you catch fleas!! Once had hopes for this pair, but they've turned into the biggest joke.

What makes this effort so much more expensive than other ebooks? Your average work of fiction by another author is almost half the price! I assume he's going 50/50 with his ghost writer? It's not well written, and I don't believe Harry is a reliable narrator - neither he or his wife seem able to stick to a story! Sure, his mother was treated poorly to say the very least; yes, the press are scum... Aside from these facts though, we only have His word for the rest of the waffle in this book and honestly, based solely on their actions to date, it's VERY difficult to have sympathy for a either Harry or his wife: they both lie, exaggerate, spin yarns and use the very same Press (whom they supposedly despise) to generate millions in personal income, all the without a care for anyone but themselves! Harry is simply not man with integrity, neither is he anyone that should serve as inspiration. Save your money. There's much better fiction out there.

A hypocritical cash grab to avoid! Filled with provable falsehoods, doused with overpriveledge & sprinkled with more than a pinch of hypocrisy, this is a bitter book to read where the ghost writer has done the best they can. Nobody chooses their family, including Harry, nor should be condemned by dint of their birth, but despite the best efforts of the writer, Harry's bitterness over his how his vast privilege wasn't as great as that of a future king comes through in his "memories". That Charles favoured William should be no surprise, it cannot be easy to raise another man's child & treat them precisely the same as your own. That the 3 were as close as they were is the bigger surprise & Harry felt involved enough to demand, alongside William, that Charles not wed Camilla (though Harry complains that nobody had the right to tell him not to marry Meghan). It was only once the privacy demanding Harry started mudslinging with private family details that the relationship was destroyed. Sad.
