Margaret Watkins
While Passion Sleeps is well written with good historic content. However, I was deeply disturbed by this book. The violence, abuse, malevolent manipulation, betrayal and mistrust overtook the story and left me feeling besmirched. The early days of Texan history is steeped in the blood of settlers and Native Americans alike while mistrust on the part of both abounded. Ms Busbee brings this out very graphically. Beth Ridgeway was a work in progress and although she arrived in America as a naive young girl, she was soon disillusioned and had to live with the crimes committed against her. Over time she became less trusting, but was still too easily swayed by stronger, more forceful people. Rafael was a hardened man, brought about by his upbringing and circumstances. Put together, tension flowed between Beth and Rafael despite their fighting against it. The book fortunately ends on a gentle, positive note. However, it is definitely not for sensitive readers. I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
