In diverse occasioni W. Somerset Maugham precisò che "Schiavo d'amore" – il suo secondo e più celebre romanzo, quello che già alla sua uscita, nel 1915, fece di lui uno scrittore immensamente popolare – non era «un'autobiografia, ma un romanzo autobiografico», e che Philip Carey, pur essendo orfano come lui, medico come lui, e come lui attratto dai lati meno dominabili dell'esistenza, era solo il protagonista di una finzione, e non la controfigura del suo autore. Ma se si può anche fingere di credere a quel diabolico illusionista di Maugham quando sostiene di aver prestato a Philip solo i sentimenti, è legittimo sospettare che poche altre volte la menzogna romanzesca – anche la più sofisticata e avvincente, come questa – abbia coinciso in modo tanto fedele e tanto necessario con una quasi feroce autenticità.
