Millie was born and raised in India while her father earned money to repaid the fortunes of his family. She and her parents and bother have returned to England where they are part of the "ton". Millie is very homesick for the land where she grew up, and does not fit into English aristocratic life. Alex, who has never been interested in settling down, is smitten by Millie from the first, but their courtship is a comedy of errors, in part because Alex can't read and sends a love note written by his brother to the lady his brother loves deeply (but secretly). As you would hope, all is worked out and happiness triumphs at the end.
