The reason for Deighnton's animosity appears to run deeper than a simple exchange of insults. When Jack is abducted following the Battle of Bareilly, and accused in his absence of desertion, he has to fight to clear his name - only to find Deighnton waiting for yet another, perhaps final duel...

He served fifteen years in the RAF himself, and was with the British Army in Hong Kong, where he wrote for the South China Morning Post.
