Their vacation turns into much more than they anticipated when they find themselves drawn to a club like sailors to a siren. Razor is one of my favorite stories to date. I’ve been intrigued with the idea of rewriting a fairytale for years and when I saw the listing with Decadent Publishing I knew this was my chance. So I sent in my email, and got back the story assigned to me. “The Little Folks”? What the…It was a page and a half. How was I supposed to get a novella out of this? Well, I’d wanted a challenge hadn’t I?
But I knew I didn’t want the same story with contemporary settings, I wanted to take the story apart and find the important elements. Then I wanted to take the elements of the original story, but not literally. My combinations kept revolving too tightly around the original story. So, I put it aside. I’ve come to realize sometimes the answers I need comes when I’m not working so hard to find it.
Sure enough, after a few days the story began coming together. The old elements were filled with new ones that brought interesting twists and the story started coming together. With each piece that fell into place, a handful of others appeared. Now, I have to try and explain how I write at this point. I do quite a bit of planning, but it’s mostly details about the characters, what they do, how old they are, how their lives crossed. But a lot of the story I let develop as I write. There were certainly long stretches of the story that appeared as if they had their own kind of magic.
