Collodi took his pen name from the village of his mother's birth, reflecting his deep connection to his Italian heritage. Before creating his enduring masterwork, Collodi wrote a variety of texts, including translations of French fairy tales and several Italian-language texts under different pseudonyms. His foray into children's literature coincided with the unification of Italy, a time of great cultural and educational reform.
