Prior to my command upgrade, I was looking for any reference material which would point me in the right direction and tell me which areas to focus on for my upcoming command upgrade — something like a practical guide.
Having found none I liked, I did what most first officers did at that time: study everything there was to study and ask all the captains who recently went through the upgrade about the transition.
A couple of years later, I realised that the topic of command upgrade is still not explored the way I would like it to be.
I decided that I would like to try and change that with The Command Handbook.
Unlike the other topics I usually write about for The 737 Handbook, the command upgrade doesn’t have any official manuals for me to reference, and there are also many ways to go about the route to command.
I will, therefore, offer you my point of view from my personal experience with the command upgrade, from my experience as a line training captain, and also from the experience of teaching command upgrade courses.
I hope that my mission — to provide better guidance for the command upgrade — will be at least partially successful and that you will find The Command Handbook as a helpful guide through one of the most rewarding career advancements.
