This book aims to analyze the logics and instruments by which fashion companies create collections, taking into account the variety of companies’ characteristics and business models. The collection development process is a critical activity for fashion, that must continuously renew its products, and is subject to increasingly strict time, cost and quality goals. A central theme in the book is the complexity of managing the collection development process, due to the number of operations that must be carried out and the variety of actors involved. In addition, there are outside actors, such as the raw material suppliers or manufacturers, that can participate in the development processes. There must also be interaction between the creative and managerial competences present in the company. For all of these reasons, fashion collection development requires extraordinary coordination and integration abilities. This book is the product of the work and efforts of various authors, from both the academic and professional worlds. It also features numerous examples from the fashion industry.

About the author

Paola Varacca Capello è Lecturer di Economia Aziendale presso il Dipartimento di Management e Tecnologia dell’Università Bocconi, dove si è laureata e insegna Economia Aziendale e Management of Fashion Companies. È docente SDA Bocconi per il corso Mafed (Master in Fashion, Experience and Design) sul tema dello sviluppo prodotto e del merchandising. È docente e membro del comitato scientifico del Milano Fashion Institute. Ha pubblicato diversi libri, articoli e casi sulla moda, sul lusso, sul gioiello e collabora alla redazione del rapporto annuale Fashion and Luxury Insight di SDA Bocconi e Altagamma.

Nicola Misani è Ricercatore di Economia e Gestione delle Imprese presso il Dipartimento di Management e Tecnologia dell’Università Bocconi. Le sue aree di ricerca coprono la strategia aziendale, la sostenibilità, la corporate social responsibility e la gestione delle aziende multinazionali. Collabora al rapporto annuale Fashion and Luxury Insight di SDA Bocconi e Altagamma. Le sue ricerche sono state pubblicate su diverse riviste internazionali, fra le quali Journal of Business Ethics, Scandinavian Journal of Management, Business Strategy and the Environment, Business Ethics: A European Review e Ecological Economics.
