The venture was an immediate success, and the area quickly grew into a prosperous year-round community and a bustling summer resort. The Great Depression and World War II slowed this development, but by the beginning of the 1950s, the burgeoning economy and optimism in the country again encouraged people to enjoy family vacations. Fred Miller, a retired teacher and Ocean City lifeguard, is the president of the Ocean City Historical Museum and secretary of the Cape May County Cultural and Heritage Commission. He is a director of the Ocean City Lifesaving Museum and a member of Ocean City's Historic Preservation Commission. Also the author of Ocean City: America's Greatest Family Resort and Ocean City Beach Patrol, Miller brings a unique perspective to the history of this impressive community.
