Henri Rider Haggard (1856-1925) participa à l'administration coloniale anglaise du sud de l'Afrique, au Natal et au Transvaal. Il puise dans ce vécu africain pour Les Mines du roi Salomon (1885) qui fut un immense succès. Son personnage d'Allan Quatermain poursuit avec le même bonheur ses aventures fantastiques, avant de se réincarner une demi-douzaine de fois au cinéma.
