Während noch bis vor wenigen Jahren das Fach "Missions- und Religionswissenschaft" ein integraler Bestandteil an evangelischen Fakultäten war, hat sich inzwischen ein tiefgreifender Wandel vollzogen und Lehrstühle für Religionswissenschaft und interkulturelle Theologie haben sich entwickelt. Missionswerke in kirchlicher Trägerschaft bestehen zum Teil mit veränderten Aufgaben fort, während im freikirchlichen Bereich den Missionsgesellschaften nach wie vor große Bedeutung zukommt. Wieder anders erscheint die Situation in den orthodoxen Kirchen, wo aktive Missionsarbeit außerhalb des eigenen "kanonischen Territoriums" ursprünglich zur Ausbreitung des Christentums beigetragen hat, jedoch weitgehend außer Übung gekommen ist. Deshalb ist die ökumenische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Diskurs über ein neues Selbstverständnis von Mission und Missionswissenschaft ein wichtiges Desiderat – das vorliegende Buch leistet dazu einen aktuellen Beitrag. [Mission between Proselytism and Self-Abolition] While only a few years ago the subject "Mission and Religious Studies" was an integral part of Protestant faculties there has been now a fundamental change and chairs of Religious Studies and Intercultural Theology developed. Mission organisations sponsored by church institutions are still active, sometimes with a changed agenda, while mission organisations of free churches maintain a high importance. On the other hand in orthodox churches, where the active mission outside the "canonical territory" used to contribute to the spread of Christianity, it is hardly practiced anymore. Hence, the ecumenical discourse on the new self-concept of mission and Mission Studies is an important desideratum. This volume offers a current contribution to that debate.
