Not my favorite book. It was interesting, but there was very little world building. For example, one of the main character's late husband was the one who gave birth to their children. Was he transgender? Is there different anatomy in this world? It wouldn't have bugged me so much except characters brought up the fact that he carried the children constantly. There are other things in this book I didn't care for, and sometimes I wondered if it was just lazy writing. If you're looking for a fantasy book with a lot of depth, skip this one.

I usually like to describe my favorite genre as "fantasy politics", and this book is so perfectly catered to my tastes it's ridiculous. The sheer levels of pining and the ridiculous things that people do when they don't feel respected are all too real, and make for an immensely entertaining book. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book, and by the end I wanted ten more books just following Allen and Sarrica's domestic life.

The story was good. A bit verbose for my taste. It lacked sufficient world building, and the dialogue between characters felt too modern and redundant. I liked the book.
