Die Funktion eines Namens erschöpft sich häufig nicht in der Bezeichnung eines Individuums. In vormodernen Gesellschaften erfolgt die Namenvergabe zumeist sehr bewusst und kann der Legitimation von Herrschaftsansprüchen dienen oder politische Programmatiken zum Ausdruck bringen. Besonders in Führungsschichten entfalten Personennamen so oftmals performativen Charakter, um Vergangenes und Gegenwärtiges zu sichern oder Zukünftiges anzukündigen. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes untersuchen dieses Phänomen in transkultureller Perspektive und nehmen dabei vergleichend Praktiken der Neu-, Nach- und Umbenennung in chinesischen, indischen und europäischen Räumen in den Blick. A name is not merely an identifier of an individual. In pre-modern societies name-giving is a deliberate act often which might legitimise political claims and agendas. Especially the personal names of elites display performative qualities to secure past and present or to herald the future. The contributors of this volume analyse this phenomenon in a transcultural perspective comparing practices of (re)naming in Chinese, Indian and European regions.
About the author
Prof. Dr. Matthias Becher studierte Geschichte und Politische Wissenschaften in Konstanz und ist seit 1998 Professor für Mittelalterliche und Neuere Geschichte an der Universität Bonn. Von 2016 bis 2021 war er Sprecher des Sonderforschungsbereichs 1167, seither leitet er das Bonner Zentrum ›Macht und Herrschaft‹.
