Mary Mapes Dodge nacque a New York il 26 gennaio 1831. Nel 1859 iniziò a lavorare col padre seguendo la pubblicazione di due riviste: Working Farmer e United States Journal. Nel giro di pochi anni ottenne il successo del pubblico per alcune storie brevi, raccolte in The Irvington Stories, mentre le veniva richiesta un’opera più corposa. La Dodge quindi scrisse Hans Brinker, o I pattini d’argento, che divenne subito un best seller.
