Martin Cruz Smith is my favourite detective author by a long shot. I have read most Renko novels and I rate this one among his best. Besides the usual elements, the child chess hustler, Tatiana his lover and Arkady's nonchalant attitude, the writing has a vitality and intelligence about it. The story twists and turns, but is original and references many current features of the 'new' Russia and Vladimir Putin.I found the book a little short; I like to sink my teeth into 400 plus pages, but very entertaining

have read most of Arkady series of books this was the worst, political opinions and a walk in mountains.. Polar Star still untouchable

More a story of wilderness survival. Very little investigation until the end. Too little too late. Very disappointing.
