About this ebook

Mars is a desolate world. Largely forgotten by Earth, the planet remains helpless in the stranglehold of Arnie Kott, who as boss of the plumbers' union has a monopoly over the vital water supply.

Arnie Kott is obsessed by the past; the native Bleekmen, poverty-stricken wanderers, can see into the future; while to Manfred, an autistic boy, time apparently stops. When one of the colonists, Norbert Steiner, commits suicide, the repercussions are startling and bizarre.

PKD's standards are massively high in terms of SF. I am a huge fan of his work and this is another great example of how ahead of his time he was. Some great concepts and you get a real sense of the struggles of a colony trying to get off the ground. As in 'do androids dream of electric sheep' PKD paints a picture of empty and abandoned places and alludes to (but never reveals) the reasons for that emptiness. This is a good, short novel and though not one of his best it is still engaging and original

A book which although interesting and well constructed becomes somewhat faded in memory over time.
