Il piccolo libro di Rut si svolge all'aria aperta, nei campi, anche di notte. È tempo di mietitura e una donna straniera sta per entrare nella storia sacra d'Israele e del mondo. Dal grembo di Rut passerà la stirpe di Davide e dunque del Messia. Nessun angelo la avvisa e nessun sogno, ma basta la sua pura volontà di essere sposa e madre in Israele. Rut lascia la sua terra, Moab, per aiutare l'anziana ebrea Naomi a ristabilirsi nel suo luogo d'origine, Betlemme. Ha già pronunciato il suo voto di appartenenza: 'Il tuo popolo è il mio popolo e il tuo Elohìm è il mio Elohìm'. La sua volontà si compie con energia di amore. Rut, bella di suo, tracima di bellezza aggiunta, per la sua dedizione. In apertura di vangelo e di cristianità, Matteo nomina Rut nella discendenza che termina su Gesù. L'Antico e il Nuovo Testamento, già uniti in alto, si saldano in terra nel grembo di madri fatidiche. Erri De Luca
