About this ebook

The latest - brilliant - Matt Scudder novel from award-winning Lawrence Block

Matt Scudder - former cop and alcoholic - has had enough. He plans to wind up his investigations and concentrate on AA meetings and his lovely wife, Elaine. But he agrees to take one last case. Louise, a single woman, has finally met a man she likes, but she fears he's keeping something from her and so hires Matt to check him out.

But before Matt can track down the real identity of Louise's lover, a horrific murder is committed - and the only forensic evidence links the killer to Elaine. Matt is convinced that the killer is an old foe of his, a man who terrorised and murdered his way through New York until Matt stood in his way.

And now he's stalking Elaine...

All my favourite Scudder cast members embroiled in a thrilling murder mystery that holds you in suspense and encourages you to keep turning the pages. Lawrence Block has an immense talent for drawing characters with realism and depth, each one is carefully studied and believable. The wry humour, typical of New Yorkers, is ever present and in the midst of murder and mayhem a smile is often injected into the tension. Block is the Old Master of story telling and this book is amongst his best, an inventive plot and enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat.

I love this character and the series but have noticed a disturbingly frequent reoccurence of sick sadistic rape and torture.. again in this book. For that reason I think this may be the last one I read.
