The Shape of Darkness by Laura Purcell, narrated by Sophie Aldred Laura Purcell's latest offering, The Shape of Darkness, narrated perfectly by Sophie Aldred, is up to her usual standard of spooky suspense. This title relates to a young, albino child who genuinely has the gift of mediumship and is used by her elder sister to earn money for them and for the younger girl's father who is suffering from phosphorus poisoning after working in a match factory. Added to these characters are Agnes, a struggling silhouette artist whose customers have started to turn up dead and her former brother in law, Simon, who is also a surgeon. There are many, many secrets in the plot and I am not about to divulge any of them, suffice to say that if you enjoyed Ms Purcell’s previous titles, you will love this one too and, if you haven’t read any then you can start here as all her novels stand alone. As usual The Shape of Darkness is beautifully written and I recommend it unreservedly.
