About this ebook

Fans of Cline’s Ready Player One and Scalzi’s Lock In will enjoy the riveting second installment of the series.

Commander Grace Buteo now knows why her husband and son were murdered, but her hunt for their killer is interrupted by a more urgent case.

When an anti-VR activist disappears, the last place his family expected to find him was CyTown Towers, a cyber living community.

As Grace and Assistant Inspector Heron Jane begin to unravel the mystery of his disappearance, a bigger crime and darker truth emerges—worse than any they could have imagined—leaving Grace to question everything she thought was real …

Book 2 picks up about a month after Book 1. A new conspiracy/mystery for Grace and Heron to solve, but the stakes are much higher. Now she's up against "the powers that be" that are hidden from public view, but manipulate the Zone behind the scenes, are not afraid to get their hands dirty to protect their secrets, and have extensive influence and power. Again, lies, fraud, murder, tax evasion, plus attempts to "disappear" Grace are rampant. Who can she trust adds to the tension. Lots of interesting science fiction themes are used, and a few unexpected technologies. There is suspense to the end of the book, when things are finally satisfactorily resolved, but still enough loose ends to justify Book 3

About the author

Kory M. Shrum is author of the bestselling Shadows in the Water and Dying for a Living series, as well as several other novels. She has loved books and words all her life. She reads almost every genre you can think of, but when she writes, she writes science fiction, fantasy, and thrillers, or often something that’s all of the above.

In 2020, she launched a true crime podcast “Who Killed My Mother?” under the name K.B. Marie, sharing the true story of her mother’s tragic death. You can listen for free on YouTube or your favorite podcast app.

When not writing or producing her show, she can usually be found under thick blankets with snacks. The kettle is almost always on. When she’s not eating, reading, writing, or indulging in her true calling as a stay-at-home dog mom, she loves to plan her next adventure. (Travel.)

She lives in Michigan with her equally bookish wife, Kim, and their rescue pug, Charley.
