Der Roman ist vorgeblich ein Erlebnisbericht des französischen Professors Pierre Aronnax, Autor eines Werkes über "Die Geheimnisse der Meerestiefen". In den Jahren 1866 und 1867 häufen sich auf allen Weltmeeren rätselhafte Schiffsunglücke. Die Presse spekuliert, ein bislang unbekanntes Seeungeheuer oder aber ein "Unterwasserfahrzeug mit außerordentlicher mechanischer Kraft" habe die Schiffe zum Kentern gebracht, Aronnax vermutet einen gigantischen Narwal als Ursache. Wegen seines Fachwissens als Meereskundler wird er 1867 von der amerikanischen Regierung gebeten, sich einer Expedition zur Klärung der Vorgänge anzuschließen, und so sticht Aronnax in Begleitung seines gleichmütigen Dieners Conseil an Bord der US-Fregatte Abraham Lincoln in See. Nach wochenlanger Suche im Nordpazifik wird das fragliche Objekt gesichtet.
