Dieses Buch fällt ein wenig aus dem Rahmen. Es erzählt keine fiktive Geschichte aus der Zukunft, in der es schon Dinge gibt, die zu Vernes Zeiten noch nicht existierten. Verne wirft stattdessen einen Blick in die Vergangenheit und schildert ein wenig oberflächlich und unspektakulär die Entdeckungsreisen von Seefahrern, beispielsweise nach Amerika und Asien. Die Ausführungen sind nicht sehr spannend und anschaulich; es fehlt der Reiz des Exotischen und Neuen. Es ist nicht verwunderlich, dass das Buch völlig unbekannt geblieben ist.
