Although this can be read as a stand alone there are appearances and references to former books in the series. This is a delightful book about Joie and Reggie. Reggie is the personal guard for Lady Ashworth and she feels that his talents are being underused. Lady Ashworth convinces her husband to give Reggie an assignment in their spy network. Reggie is tasked with meeting the mistress of Napoléon's brother who is seeking refuge in England and convincing her to return to France to gain more information. Unfortunately, Reggie mistakes Lady Joie James as his contact and cannot reconcile her innocence for a hardened courtesan. Lady Joie is being sent by her father, an archbishop, to her aunt's in the country because of a supposed scandal. Due to the axle on her carriage breaking and inclement weather she and her entourage must seek refuge at a local inn. Against her will she is drawn to the dashing man who seeks to make her acquaintance. Joie is inquisitive and extremely observant. She eventually seeks to help Reggie against his wishes. With the addition of smugglers, tunnels, subterfuge and a misstep or two, the rode to a happy outcome for everyone is a winding road. This book really was fun to read. I love all of the Code Breaker books. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
