ईश्वरचंद्र का जन्म 26 सितंबर; 1820 को मिदनापुर जिले (पश्चिम बंगाल) के बीरसिंग गाँव में एक गरीब ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था। उनकेपिता ठाकुरदास साधारण नौकरी करते थे।
