Texas Ranger Gwen Phillips is one of the most hardworking law enforcement officers in the state of Texas, driven by a childhood event that shaped not only her work ethic but also her dedication to helping find kidnapped children. She witnessed the kidnapping of her best friend and has lived with survivor guilt ever since. So when she is called to rural Pedernales County to help out the local sheriff and his small staff, she’s all business. Her determination to keep things purely on a professional level proves difficult, however, when she finds she can’t keep her eyes from straying to sexy Sheriff Cade Duvall. Add to that the fact that he seems interested in her as well, and she’s thrown totally off kilter.

Cade Duvall comes from a long line of lawmen, and early in his career he was determined to live up to that legacy no matter the cost. That cost ended up being his marriage. Since his divorce, he’s learned to balance his work with leisure time. And since Ranger Gwen Phillips’ arrival, he’s realized he wants her to be part of that life outside of work. But she proves a tough nut to crack, deep in that workaholic mode that he knows so well. Someone needs to teach Gwen to have fun, and he figures he’s just the man for the job.

As they work together to find the missing girl, they both come to realize there is more to life than working all the time. Much more.
