Buy a bottle of Pesco and some sea buscuits for this book. Definitely a prototype for Melville later Moby Dick, but I don't really see any of the depth (no pun ) of that book. Instead this reads like a shore leave story. Sailors being sailors never changed I guess. There's some jabs at the French rule and the missionaries but pretty tame. I wonder if he had a better last night on the island with the daughter than he admitted in the story?
