Sorry, folks. I guess I walked into the wrong room. The Ninth as a book is pretty good. It just has the wrong title. Opus 125 is mentioned, but that's about all. The rest is European diplomacy before and after Napoleon as a fulcrum. Or maybe the D Minor is the fulcrum. My guess is that Mr. Sachs was well into it before he remembered that you can't describe music with words. No matter what you say about it, or how you ascribe its spirit, speed, or volume to human thoughts, it stays music. And he knows it. rrv
About the author
Harvey Sachs is a writer and music historian and the author or co-author of eight previous books, of which there have been more than fifty editions in fifteen languages. He has written for The New Yorker and many other publications, has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fellow of the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers, and is currently on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He lives in New York City.
